Remember Armored Core V for X360? Not even 10 minutes in and you're faced with a Freddie Krueger wannabe bot with beam chainsaws (that ofc, ohko if hits).

Thermal, not beam. That glow, is the teeth glowing red-hot, not projecting beams. The Grind Blade shunts all the thermal build-up from your reactor into the chainsaws, while disabling your radiators. And I've taken a glance from it and lived, with the stock AC. You just need to be on max HP, and dodge while shooting, along with luck. You stay still, you're dead.

Demon's Souls is way more punishing mainly because of world tendency. Sometimes all you can do is die and try again.

I think that it's more become a meme that people want to Flanderize about the game. (The same way Dwarf Fortress is supposedly so hard to learn...) Strictly speaking, if you define "hard" by "how often you die," then stuff like Hotline Miami, I Wanna Be The Guy, or Super Meat Boy are much, much harder games. But death in those games truly is utterly trivial to the point of only losing seconds of progress. I generally agree with the argument I've seen that Souls games aren't so much "hard" as "tense". They punish recklessness, but aren't that hard if you use patience and caution.
