<p>However, the sparse past is part of my northern bones --- although such scarcity and stone and timber rough immediacy of the built landscape ( if such buildings were sometimes crude, still 10,000 times better than a skyscraper ) was no doubt translated into all other ages and climes, such as peasant life in China or Peru or Algiers --- yet the lack of things to occupy oneself back then terrifies.</p>
