I would more call him the godfather of "modern" animu and mango, but it's not like there was much before him. Tetsujin 28 manga, Ougon Bat mangas and Kamishibais... I think he separated Japanese animation from Western animation... so much of animation before and during his time was indistinguishable whether it was Japanese or American, specifically some of the Tatsunoko "cute" series'. For YEARS I was under the impression that Wacky Races was a Japanese show that Tatsunoko did as a more colourful response to their already popular Mach Gogogo(Speed Racer), only to find out it was by Hanna Barbera.

Not surprising at all. People stick to current series, with past series getting rare shout-outs or even rarer bona-fide fanarts. Tezuka also never did something so, um... memetic enough to be parodied to this day, as Go Nagai or Leiji Matsumoto did.

You know, considering Osamu Tezuka is the "godfather" of both anime and manga, it's a little surprising how many purple tags there are with just a 1 or 2 after them.
