Once he receives the blade he boasts that it is strong enough to cleave through mountains and during the journey he uses it to kill a giant pike (after both Lemminkäinen and Ilmarinen had tried to kill it their own swords and failed) and cut through mist conjured up by Louhi. Not exactly grade A Saber material but I can see where the idea of making him a saber could come from.

Holy crap, Vainamoinen!? It fits frighteningly well too.

He spent over 700 years in his mother's womb and so was born wise (explaining why he's summoned inside his mother but capable of intelligent communication).

The only real question would be why is he a Saber?
