Suggestion: nuke tag "weapon"

Posted under Tags

As recently discussed in topic #16209, I suggest nuking weapon.

Other previous discussions:

Reason A: Because if we allow all kinds of weapons to be tagged weapon (portable weapons and also non-portable weapons attached to vehicles, mechas, etc.), then the tag is too generic. Even if we allow it for portable weapons only, it's still arguably too generic.

Reason B: Because if we only allow portable weapons to be tagged weapon, then the name is inaccurate compared to actual English usage (there are all kinds of weapons, not just portable ones), and also prone to mistagging as people often use this tag for non-portable weapons in spite of that rule.

Reason C: It's one thing to make weapon only for portable weapons, but then this potentially affects all kinds of other weapon tags that imply or could imply it:

If weapon is for portable weapons only, then the tags above have two options: 1- either they imply weapon and get also restricted for portable weapons only; 2- or they don't imply weapon to allow them to tag non-portable weapons.

Non-portable examples of miniguns, gatling guns, etc.: post #1711557, post #1391578, post #2389864, post #2453914, etc.

All these tags are less generic than "weapon", so if anything they have less reasons to have their definitions restricted.

It seems that many kinds of guns already imply gun. Maybe we could also introduce a new tag melee weapon for swords, clubs, etc.

Both the existing gun and the suggested melee weapon are weapon groups that are less generic than weapon.

This idea of using some weapon groups is inspired by topic #12808 (back from 2016), which apparently caused the generic tag vehicle to be split into aircraft, watercraft, ground vehicle, and space craft.

-1 from me. Generic as it may be, "weapon" is actually a tag I use often when looking for inspiration for d&d npcs or character designs. Filtering by common weapon types (sword, gun, etc) often filters out interesting results that I wouldn't have thought to search for.

I don't see why you're afraid of weapon being a too generic tag.
This tag is supposed to be a catch-all term for everything: Swords, axes, guns, cannons etc.

If you you want to be more specific then add the specific term to your search. If you know the term, this shouldn't be an issue.
