[BUR] Bikini top/bottom

Posted under Tags

The bulk update request #2119 has been rejected.

Reason:

I had assumed this was already in place and have had a bunch of misses myself. Looking at black bikini bottom alone, there are 728 misses.

I'm doing the colors here first (with post counts > 50), although the rest can be done later based upon how well the above does.

I really don't like the way we deal with these tags. As far as I'm concerned the tags should be called bikini top only and bikini bottom only, because that's what they're really for, and they should imply bikini. Bikini top is just for when a character is wearing the top half of a bikini without the bottom. That doesn't justify having a whole separate set of tags in my view.

Compare this to something like single glove. We don't call the tag glove and we don't treat it as a totally separate thing from gloves. We don't reinvent black glove, white glove, etc tags for every type of glove. We just treat single glove as a subset of gloves. Bikinis should be treated the same way.

I have to agree with evazion on this, we are getting way too many *_bikini_top and *_bikini_bottom tags.

While not disagreeing with the general principle of what evazion is saying, I really don't like the idea of bikini top only or bikini bottom only as tag names. They sound way too much like they mean "naked bikini top" or "naked bikini bottom"...

Agree. If that is the way to go, it'd be easier and less confusing to just keep the same name and update the wiki to make things clear, then go through all of the color tags and add bikini color tags as required. If required, just apply judicious amounts of tag gardening / user counseling until the community at large gets the new standard.

The problem with bikini top and bikini bottom is that they get constantly misused because people take the names too literally. Bikini top sounds like it's an article of clothing when really it's for a state of dress (wearing a bikini top without a bikini bottom). Trying to garden these tags is a neverending battle.

We need tag names to be clear about their intent. It's an obvious and natural assumption that bikini_top would mean here exactly what it means in common English usage. The fact that it currently doesn't is like having a trap set for people who don't second-guess every tag. Better, IMO, to have tags that are either perfectly clear about their meaning, or else are just weird enough that people click through to the wiki to better understand their usage.

In this case, I offer the following variations:

bikini_(top_only) / bikini_(bottom_only)

bikini_as_top / bikini_as_bottom

The latter pair in particular, I think, is very clear as to its meaning without further explanation, which helps avoid misuse by users who can't be bothered to read the wiki.
