What is a face mask?

This isn't a rhetorical question. The face_mask tag is an ambiguous undefined mess, and the term "face mask" itself doesn't convey any information other than that it's a mask that's worn on one's face, which is the case with all masks anyway. The term is so vague that Wikipedia even lists "diving mask" as one of its possible meanings. Dictionary.com gives a different definition altogether.

The vast majority of posts with this tag should have been tagged either ninja_mask, surgical_mask, or gas_mask. The rest are a veritable grab-bag of face coverings that aren't even all masks. You don't have to look too hard to find loads and loads of posts that confirm this. Just browsing through these posts, I see domino masks, fox masks, half masks, noh masks, masquerade masks, wrestling masks, balaclavas, blindfolds, helmets, and veils. They're all over the place.

Creating an implication to a tag that doesn't even have a definition in the wiki is something we should never, ever do. Come up with a clear definition for the tag first; talk about implications later. As it stands right now, my vote would be to nuke face_mask entirely because so many users are habitually treating it as a catchall tag that is redundant to mask.

I think that for the most part, face mask is used for masks that cover the nose and mouth, but not the eyes or full face. This is of course completely counter-intuitive, but that's how it's usually used.

I would suggest cleaning it up and renaming it to mouth mask instead. If we nuke it we won't have a good way to find these types of masks.

That is how I've been using it at least though I've always found the name weird so it's probably better to change the name as suggested.

We also have facial mask which seems split between surgical masks and the beauty kind.

We need to figure out what to do with face mask first because surgical mask and face mask are frequently mixed up.

Forgot to point out that mouth mask is going to need some cleanup to remove cases where it was used for full face masks.

Should ninja_mask implicate mouth_mask too? What about mouth_veil? Oxygen_mask?

Also, does Soldier: 76's mask count? In most images it appears to be integral with the visor, making it look more like a full mask .

I started to scour for 123 pages featuring mouth_mask -surgical_mask to find images that don't fit anymore, it's doable but that's quite a lot of work.

I would say it's safe for ninja mask to imply mouth mask, but not always for oxygen mask or respirator. I wouldn't count Soldier: 76's mask.

Mouth veil is a tag I just recently found and populated. It's visually similar to mouth mask, but most things under it are tagged veil and not mask, so I'm not sure about tagging it with mouth mask.

We still have a few posts tagged as facial mask, should they be renamed to beauty mask, while also tag the others as mouth mask etc.?
