It's not even really all that good of a stance, all things considered. Your body is in the way of attacking or defending from the outside without massive telegraphing, the sword is pointed forward, preventing any swings from the inside without a fairly large windup, and the arms are locked, making any sort of thrust awkward at best.
It's also a valid sword stance, at least for the Germainic school of swordsmanship as taught by Liechtenauer. See Pflug guard under the Bloßfechten (Unarmored Combat) section.
