A type of steamed, filled bun or bread-like dumpling in various Chinese cuisines.
There are many variations in fillings (meat or vegetarian) and preparation (usually steamed). In its bun-like aspect it is very similar to the traditional Chinese mantou (and regionally the term mantou may refer to baozi as well).
In Japan, baozi are known as manjuu, the Japanese rendering of mantou. A meat-filled manjuu is a nikuman; those referred to as manjuu typically have a sweet filling.
Sweet manjuu became even more popular due to Love Live! School Idol Project since it is the signature item of Homura Bakery, which Kousaka Honoka's family owns and lives over. Good Smile Company, as a result, produced official Homura Bakery manjuu in packs.
Other names for baozi include bao, bau, humbow, nunu, pow or pau.
