It's not that they though men where bad, it's just twins of the same gender. Bridget has a twin brother, so they decided to raise Bridget as a girl. ...so they wouldn't have bad luck or something.

There's actually a long history as to why Bridget is the way he is. It's because he was raised as a girl in a nunnery, one that basically said that men were bad. Bridget also has a brother... or a sister... I can't remember, but either way, he always thought of himself as inferior to him/her.
