Aoba wasn't actually faster then an Iowa. They came out of the gates like 900 tons over design weight, the rebuilt Furutaka were flat out said to max out at about 33 knots and Aoba was basically the same ship just built new. This is basically the same as Iowa, but probably favoring the battleship seeing as it was a decade and a half newer and heavier ships tend to be able to maintain speed better in a seaway.

This is of course before Aoba was crippled and reduced to 25 knots in 1943 confining her to escort duty until she was permanently hobbled by further engine damage and declared a total constructive loss at the end of 1944.
