The defense is to discourage the enemy from getting too close, not to slaughter them wholesale. It's best used as a last resort when you're falling back and don't want them tailing you too close.

So the Diamond's pointing the ruddy thing, the Spade's the one telling the Diamond when to let the thing go, the Heart's handling the loading process (exactly how long does the TOW load?) and the Club's the close-in defense. Nice detail for the weapon team right there.
