Different styles of pasta are less for texture and flavour, and more for matching the physical profile of the pasta itself with the sauce; some types suit thick and chunky sauces, others thin. In general, you're trying to somewhat maximise the amount of sauce attached to the pasta.

Thinner ones, like spaghetti and linguine, are more suited for light, creamy sauces.
Thicker ones, like tagliatelle or fettuccine, match better with rich, meaty sauces.

As bolognese is rather rich and weighty, it just isn't optimal to use a thin spaghetti with it, you just wouldn't get enough sauce in each bite. (You could also use shells or tubes instead to make little sauce packets.)

Personally I've always been of the view that the difference between pasta of similiar quality of manufacture is quite minimal in many if not most applications and more about visuals then any genuinely discernible difference in flavor or texture, with a few obvious exceptions here and there, but for dumping meat sauce over isn't one of those.

When I was a kid (1960's), my mom made "meat sauce spaghetti". The sauce consisted of tomatoes, tomato paste, ground meat and onions. It was the only type of Italian noodles in Germany that time and eating them with a tomato-based sauce was the common way. EVERY kid loved spaghetti the way they love French fries today. I grew 20 before I even knew that there were other ways to prepare spaghetti.

But Roma has a point. She never was mad that it was bad, she was mad that it was falsely labeled. If you asked for a turkey sandwich and get a ham sandwich while being told it's turkey, it's perfectly valid to give a WTF, even if it's a good ham sandwich.
