The British also had their M-class submarine at the end of World War One. Armed with one 12 inch cannon (surplus off a pre-dreadnought), they were designed for coastal bombardment. But it was reasoned that they could be used in things like raiding, since torpedoes at that time were still very short ranged and not considered very reliable against moving targets. An flat and level 12 inch gun shot at the waterline at torpedo ranges should cripple or sink just about anything short of an armored cruiser or a battleship in those days.

I tried to fade out the second bubble with mask:linear-gradient(to right, #ffff, #fff0); but it's left out of the rendered note. Is that property blacklisted or something?

I dunno why I went this far, but just for fun I tried an ABX test -- having the computer show me one of the two at random and guessing if it's the old or the new one -- 10 times and got it right every time. So, it's possible to tell them apart with the naked eye. However, I don't think I would have noticed it without doing a computer comparison to show me where to look.

I changed monitors, and yeah, I can see it now. It's so tiny I don't really see the value in making that change, but artists gonna artist I guess.

Yeah, the artist put both the wrong commentary and translated tags but they have changed them now so you're right.

And while you guys are wondering about that, I question whatever could be the reason for a very bright, very streaky thing flying through the clouds above their heads. Certainly not a meteor, for sure.

Last I checked, those don't fly parallel to the ground nor can it do a 180 in mid-air.

There's no indication that this piece of art is intended to be historically accurate. If you look at other pictures from this series, there are several that make it rather clear that the figure in white and the figure in red are female.
