Dwarf Fortress has taught me that killing all elves is not a viable solution, but that you basically have to cull them as much as possible since they will outbreed you otherwise.

That is pretty much how all safety glass shatters. It stays together pretty well even when broken and the fragments are all blunt and farily consistent pebble sized. Really amazing bit of technology.
