The hook wasn't that you <em>did</em> commit murder, but that the authorities <em>believe you did</em> and were <em>certainly</em> going to execute you if they found you (according to the anomaly). "All you had to do" to prevent this was go to the lair of the anomaly and it/they would help "prove your innocence". Most people would be quite scared if a news report suddenly informed them that they were under surveillance and wanted for mass murder.</p><p>It basically feels like one of those IRS scams, only instead of Google Play cards they want <em>you</em>.
