Slight error here - he's clearly using a Webley revolver, most likely the Mk. VI, but these have a capacity of 6 rounds, not 8, regardless of caliber. Only the Webley-Fosbery in .38 holds 8 rounds, and its cylinder looks very different to the one shown here.

It is like a hydra, you break up one group and they will just rename themselves and make another.

And of course since science is the pursuit of knowledge that by nature isn't strictly grounded in our current expectations of reality, I wouldn't doubt there were/are groups out there researching occult projects like angel making (not really sure what that would even mean). I doubt it would be their primary project though since they would need to make their money by selling actual progress in more pragmatic topics.
