So why is Rival-chan just staying in that pose?
She absolutely intended to faceplant OL in the lap. Can't blame her.

Why is Johnston intimidated by Kirishima? Johnny stared down not only Haruna and “The Old Bones” Kongou, but Yamato herself.

She doesn't have Gamby to protecc.

Because it's a Japanese comic. Foreign ships are terrified of the Japanese ships that sank them, and the Japanese ships go out of their way to harass the ships they sank. Meanwhile, the reverse is not true. This is why Atlanta is always depicted as being scared of Akatsuki and, for some reason, Yuudachi, even though Atlanta is the one that sank Akatsuki, who does not seem afraid of Atlanta in return.

Funny... I seem to remember Atlanta and Akatsuki starting off being scared of each other then slowly bonding.

And I do seem to recall at least one donjon where Katori and a couple of other ship girls were afraid of Iowa, or at least nervous around her. Lol there was even one where Katori attempts to assert her dominance over Iowa, only to learn why a light cruiser shouldn't get in-between the legs of a battleship.

IIRC this happens in the official Fubuki 4-koma manga.

Sooooo... looking at a combination of kantai collection and traumatized it seems that they are divided into 11 pictures where USS Albacore is the source of the trauma, 2 pictures about Yukikaze's survivor's guilt, 8 pictures about Shigure's PTSD, 9 pictures where Iowa is traumatizing the japanese ships, 2 pictures about Hibiki's trauma over losing her entire desdiv, 5 pictures where Warspite is traumatizing the Italian ships, especially Zara and Pola, 3 pictures where Saratoga is traumatizing Ryuujou, 21 pictures where Ark Royal is traumatizing Bismarck, 4 pictures where USS Enterprise is the source of the trauma (one of those where Enterprise doesn't even show up and the 1st CarDiv just gets triggered by Saratoga's Battle Efficiency Award), 5 pictures where Gambier Bay is getting traumatized, 3 pictures where Ark Royal is traumatized by U-boats in general (not including 4 where Ark Royal is also traumatizing Bismarck), 2 where Johnston is traumatizing Yamato, 2 where Atlanta and Akatsuki are traumatizing each other, 2 where Houston is getting traumatized, 17 pictures related to various other bits of wartime trauma, 2 pictures related to historical non-wartime trauma, and 21 pictures that have nothing to do with historical events, 4 of which involve Uzuki getting traumatized by a lightbulb.

Honestly, this scenario is more disturbing than funny. This base is full of problem drinkers and one of them is willing to violently suppress any attempt to address the issue because she's comfortable with the status quo. It's dysfunctional, but unlike Nonco or Ido it's too much of a down-to-earth dysfunction instead of an off-the-wall, cartoony one.

"Very strongly implied that rival-chan is a lesbian"? How is it strongly implied? The morning after scene was a gag and this one isn't even inherently sexual.

Gag or not, Rival-chan's reaction in post #3946663 certainly isn't the reaction of someone who was displeased by the situation. There's truth in every joke.

I could very well be wrong -- we'll see if her flirting with the dude turns out to be nothing but a farce to get with office lady or something -- but I think you're looking too much into it (or perhaps not looking into it enough. post #3892279 Why would she feel threatened by the other rival if she's into office lady?). A lot of [western] english speaking people see gay stuff everywhere even where it isn't, because that's how our culture is now. Not so sure about Japan, where this kind of comedy is commonplace.
