The problem is that the Pixiv アイドルマスター tag and the like does not reflect the usage of the idolmaster_(classic) tag here at all. It's also added to images that only feature characters from Cinderella Girls, Million Live, etc., so it would keep getting suggested as a translated tag for a lot of posts where it wouldn't be applicable.

I've added Live for You, Platinum Stars, and Stella Stage to request #1328.

I notice there's an idolmaster_(game) tag. I don't know if any of the current images are referencing a particular entry in the franchise, but if not, the tag should be emptied out since it's redundant now (wiki can note Idolmaster 1 is for the original game and Idolmaster (classic) the catch-all tag).

Good references for the Idolmaster 1 and 2 casts: post #169338, post #1179790.

Amami Haruka, Kisaragi Chihaya, Hagiwara Yukiho, Takatsuki Yayoi, and Otonashi Kotori (not shown) are unchanged between the two games.

Akatsuki Ritsuko has twin braids in 1 and a folded ponytail in 2. She does appear with twin braids in certain costumes from 2 onward, however. She was also the only character redesigned again for Idolmaster Platinum Stars (the next major entry in the series), appearing with a single braid (post #2264152).

Minase Iori has her hair brushed back in 1, and one large lock of hair brushed over her forehead in 2. (Not sure if there are good tags for these.)

Miura Azusa has long hair in 1 and short hair in 2.

Futami Ami and Futami Mami both have short ponytails in 1. In 2, Futami Mami is identifiable by her regular side ponytail.

Kikuchi Makoto's hair is slightly longer in 2 than it is in 1, reaching below her ears.

Hoshii Miki's hair is less spiked in 2 and frequently rests over her shoulders. Awakened Miki appears only in 1 and was seemingly retconned out of the franchise entirely, although from a glance there are a couple "what if" posts combining the short hair and her modified hairstyle from 2.

Ganaha Hibiki and Shijou Takane debut in the Idolmaster SP spinoff of 1 (which seems to generally not be tagged) and are unchanged in 2.

Alright, well going of the series info on Wikipedia, I felt safe tagging 2006 and before with the Idolamster 1 tag.

Idolmaster 1: idolmaster_1 date:..2007-01-01

Since Live For You! was released in Feb 28 2008, I handled 2007 in reverse order, but didn't see any references to that series.

Idolmaster 1: idolmaster_1 date:2007-01-01..2008-01-01

It wasn't until I started approaching the release date that I saw any costumes from that series, the two costumes being Monochrome spot and Marching Band.

Idolmaster 1: idolmaster_1 date:2008-01-01..2008-02-28
Idolmaster Live For You!: idolmaster_live_for_you! date:2008-01-01..2008-02-28

At this point, I want to become more familiar with the costumes before I continue on. Please feel free though to anyone more knowledgeable in this series to check my work or help out with this endeavor...(ツ)

Now that the Idolmaster 1 implication has been created, it'll need a wiki to be created. Additionally, can someone point to a good image or set of images that can help distinguish the differences between the first game and the rest of the classic series. @feline_lump maybe, since you seemed to know something about the redesigns...? If we have something to go by, then others like myself can help tag garden this and get that tag populated.

That would require a lot more work with tag cleanup, and a tag for just the first game is not particularly useful enough (I believe most of the fanart of the original characters is related to Idolmaster 2 and its spinoffs, like the anime series) to go with anything other than an extra tag with an improvised "1".

If you mean a setup where we use "idolmaster" instead of the proposed "idolmaster_(classic)", with "idolmaster_(series)" replacing "idolmaster" as currently used, then that is doable, but would require more work in removing and re-setting implications. Also, I think it would not be intuitive and people would keep tagging things like Cinderella Girls with the plain "idolmaster" tag (rather than the hypothetical "idolmaster_(series)" tag it gets implicated to).

It's actually not that uncommon. We did it recently for Splatoon 1. Many other series are the same: *_1 tag search.

Not always. Only when there are name collisions, which is avoided by having the idolmaster_1 and idolmaster_(classic) tags.

The characters went through significant redesigns between the first and second games, so it would make for a meaningful tag. +1 for all above suggestions.

I'm not familiar enough with the games enough to know what's specific to the original game, so I wouldn't be able to populate the tag myself, but it would be worth having for consistency.

Just some ideas to get the potential tag started:

First, re-route the following implications to idolmaster_(classic) (which in turn would implicate idolmaster)?: idolmaster_2, idolmaster_sp, idolmaster_shiny_festa, idolmaster_one_for_all, idolmaster_movie. Even though Idolmaster Xenoglossia uses the original character designs as a base, I'm guessing it would be preferable to keep it unimplied to "classic".

Secondly, there could be a mass edit for any post featuring the main 12 girls of 765 Production. The only place I think where an exception would need to be made is again with Idolmaster Xenoglossia. But there are a few posts of Xenoglossia that look like legitimate crossovers with the "classic" characters and would still need the tag: post #118979 So there would need to be some manual clean-up with that particular case regardless.
