serval_print implication

Posted under Tags

I don't really believe the serval's fur pattern is actually unique enough to warrant having its own tag. A lot of wild cats tend to have very similar patterns, the patterning could just as well belong to a Eurasian Lynx or Iberian Lynx.

It'd be better to come up with a more generic tag for the pattern that could apply to a variety of wild cats with the same patterning.

The basic patterns seem to be: spotted (serval, lynx, cheetah), striped, and rosette (leopard, margay, jaguar).

Think a wild cat print would be more sufficient? It could be a blanket tag, but I'm not actually all too sure how best this problem would be tackled without a lot of implications/aliases going around.

I think that may not be very specific as domestic cats can have patterns too.

If we're getting rid of serval_print or similar prints which aren't extremely distinct the way tiger prints are, maybe we should stick with spotted print, striped print, and mottled or rosette. That would also work for giraffes and similar animals.

These prints can apply to other animals, and striped or spotted is pretty visually distinctive.

Since that implication is ruled out but there's still some constructive conversation for an alternative solution I rejected the request.
