Disambuguating "charging"

Posted under Tags

The charging tag presently has two unrelated definitions (rushing forward to attack someone, or accumulating energy to power up a weapon or spell), which is one more than any tag should have. In addition, the tag is also being used outside of these definitions for charging the batteries on electronic devices like cellphones and handheld games. In the interest of improving search results, this tag should be broken up into multiple tags with their own distinct definitions as right now there's no good way to search for a specific aspect of this tag without getting a huge percentage of false positives. The tag itself can be left empty with a wiki pointing to its replacements.

As for how to go about splitting it up into better-defined tags, I'm thinking:

  • It doesn't appear that we have another tag right now for the "sprinting toward the enemy" sense of the tag. I'm considering something like rushing_foward or dash_attack as potential replacements.
  • There's already a powering_up tag with 93 posts and much the same meaning as the "energizing" meaning of charging. My only concern is potential confusion with the unrelated power-up, but it doesn't appear that this has been a problem yet.
  • We have an undefined recharging tag with 30 posts, but it seems to be primarily used charging up characters, not devices. We could fold all the device charging images into this, unless someone thinks they should be tagged differently. I don't think recharging a cellphone is significantly different from recharging an android, though.

Also, there's already a charging_attack tag, but it seems to be just as ambiguous as charging. Both tags should probably meet the same fate as they're basically the same thing right now.

Any thoughts?

I agree, tags should not have two disparate definitions.

I like powering up as a replacement for the "energizing" meaning, but I'm a bit "meh" about the name of the "sprinting" meaning. I'm pretty much fine with any of your suggestions, as long as it is standardized and documented.

Side topic

However, I did have a thought for an alternate proposition for how to handle the "sprinting" meaning. We could create a couple of movement helper tags: towards_another, away_from_another, towards_viewer, away_from_viewer. They could then be combined with the running, walking, swimming, flying, or any other movement tags, and still essentially convey the same meaning. With that, fleeing could also be replaced.
