Don't use pokemon_swsh or pokemon_(game) for new Pokémon, use only gen_8_pokemon

Posted under Tags

I believe this was already discussed before (topic #15030), but just to be extra clear:

New games called Pokémon Sword and Shield (pokemon_swsh) were announced today (February 27, 2019).

The tags pokemon_swsh and pokemon_(game) should not be used for posts that are merely depicting new Pokémon from these games. (These tags are OK for human characters from these games.)

For example, post #3429705 is just Scorbunny and nothing else.

Basically, the reason (as discussed before) is that most certainly the exact same Pokémon will appear in the anime, manga, future games and such. Therefore a post with only a generation 8 Pokémon is not necessarily representative of the Pokémon Sword and Shield games.

For the same reason, we don't use the tag pokemon_rgby for every Squirtle, nor pokemon_gsc for every Totodile.

I'm only saying this because a few posts merely depicting gen 8 Pokémon were already being tagged pokemon_swsh and pokemon_(game), which I removed.

@Danielx21 I would like your opinion on tagging official art of the Pokémon themselves with their games, since they are usually made for specific games in the franchise. Take Charizard, for example:

https://www.pidgi.net/wiki/File:Charizard_-_Pokemon_Ranger.jpg

These are four of its official arts, each made for a specific game. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that these particular pieces of art are tied to the games themselves.

Should this be the case for the official art though?

Good question. I believe this specific case has not been addressed before.

Alright, in my opinion it's OK to use game tags in official art such as Charizard from different games that you mentioned.

So post #3429681 (official art of Grookey from gen 8) would be tagged pokemon_swsh and pokemon_(game).

We may want to add (or readd) the game tags to some older official art posts too. (example: post #2459570 is official art of Stufful from gen 7, so it would get tagged pokemon_sm)

Just a comment:

Some people have been repeatedly adding pokemon_swsh to gen 8 Pokémon creatures.

If you check the tag history of post #3429802 (a personification of Scorbunny, a newly introduced gen 8 Pokémon), you'll see that multiple people tried to add pokemon_swsh to that post, which I repeatedly removed.

Link to the tag history of that post:

Unfortunately, the "official art" rule would add a layer of complexity to these tags. But that's OK, I guess it can't be helped. I see the benefits of using game tags in official art posts.

Glad you agree.

Adding the game tags to images of Pokémon that were only just released will always be a problem. I think that the complexity this official art rule will add is minor in comparison, so I wouldn't worry about it.
