The only counterexample I see is post #3485265 and I'd say that's just a mistag. We don't usually tag tail types for mermaids. For example, for shark-tailed mermaids we tag shark girl + mermaid instead of mermaid + shark tail.

This can only lead to trouble. Users tagging mermaids (or lamias, for that matter) with tail is enough of a problem already, and encouraging them to tag mermaids with dolphin_tail will only reinforce this.

I know dolphins/whales are mammals, not fish, but large part of fish tail posts have horizontal fin since it's a counterpart of mermaid.

We could use dolphin tail tag combine with fish tail/mermaid tag:

The tail tag will naturally come along with fish tail in 2nd example.

Just to say, the current definition of tail does not allow for actual dolphin/whale etc. tails. The overwhelming majority of mermaid posts also do not have the tail tag, and a mermaid's tail is similar to a proper dolphin tail (and some, although far from all, images in the dolphin tail tag) in that the tail dominates the lower half of the body and there are no other limbs on that part of the body (fins notwithstanding)
