planet aliases and implication

Posted under Tags

The bulk update request #2456 is pending approval.

create alias venus_(planet) -> venus
create alias mars_(planet) -> mars
create implication saturn -> planetary_ring

Reason: Both versions of the venus and mars tags are currently in use, it's a bit silly.

Currently the saturn tag can be used "for planets ... with visible rings around them" despite the fact that the planetary_ring tag has existed for over a decade. Ambiguous situations could occur where an artist draws, for instance, the planet earth with rings around it. In such a situation planetary_ring would be a more appropriate tag since saturn is not featured in the image. Once the implication is in place the saturn tag may simply be removed from images clearly not containing it.

I think venus and mars should probably be changed into disambiguations instead.

Regarding the Saturn one, it's worth pointing out (although perhaps a bit pedantic) that Saturn has not had rings until relatively recently - someone depicting the solar system during the Jurassic, for instance, would be being historically inaccurate if they protrayed Saturn as having rings. It's a hypothetical, but it's better to avoid creating the problems to begin with. It's not as though the Saturn tag is common enough to prevent them being manually tagged.

Should Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus also be moved to x_(planet) tags to make them consistent with the other non-earth planets, and differentiate them from the gods as well as any characters named after them?

I see that you have already edited Saturn's wiki and agree with the changes you have made. Saturn isn't even the only planet with rings in our solar system (all 4 gas giants have them), merely the most visible and thus well known.

I'm not sure differentiating them from their gods is necessary as said gods don't currently appear in any images on the site unless you count, say, Zeus.

At the risk of starting a debate over a subject that some people seem to get irrationally emotional about, wouldn't it be more accurate to use Pluto_(dwarf_planet)?

I would just stick with planet for the sake of consistency, since I doubt it makes a difference as far as danbooru is concerned. I'm sure someone will demand it be changed, but I think that'll happen regardless of which we end up going with.

It's too specific, and visually there is no way we'll get depictions of gravity rounded celestial objects where you could tell that they haven't "cleared their orbits" to split hairs between what is a dwarf and what isn't.
