This just makes my head shake. It's as if the other two girls have to be on par with teh Rei.

Well most of Evangelion's surnames came from WWII naval vessels. Ayanami was a Fubuki class destroyer, wheras Souryuu was an aircraft carrier.

It seems Asuka was downgraded from that aircraft carrier, to be another Fubuki class destroyer, Shikinami, which was originally in the same destroyer division as Ayanami.

Makinami was a slightly newer Yuugumo class destroyer.

So in affect, I guess they did sort of did put Asuka on the same level as the others. She used to be on the same level as Ritsuko and Misato, who were also both aircraft carriers (Akagi and Katsuragi)

HMS Illustrious was also a WWII carrier, so I guess that makes Mari twice as boat-tastic as the rest of the cast.

I think it's making a point of some mixed ancestry of Mari's.

In the same vein, Asuka's mixed Japanese/American-German ancestry was alluded to by being named after both the Souryuu (now the Shikinami) and the USS Langley (first aircraft carrier in the US Navy).

If that's a true precedent, Mari is most likely British/Japanese.

I can understand the symbolism of that, really all that bothers me about said name change, is the fact that they give her the Souryuu name, and leave it at that, for FIFTEEN years, then, out of the blue, decide to change the name, without any major justification, just for the rerelease. Also, Mari's name reaks of My Immortal
