Tag Discussion: Shampoo

Posted under General

Right now shampoo is used for the act of washing hair, while shampoo_(ranma_1/2) is used for the character, Shampoo, from Ranma 1/2.

I think that Shampoo (the character) should have the base tag, and we should find something else for the hair washing version.

I'm not convinced. They're 36 vs. 62 posts, that's not a huge difference. We're entering times where people might simply not know Shampoo as a character. I say we leave it as is.

+1 for not changing it.

While characters do get precedence in many cases, I think we should prefer to not let them supplant common general items. What would happen of some anime in the future decided to name a character ribbon with no surname? It wouldn't make sense to rename the pre-established tag.

Moreover, chances are good that someone will try to use the tag for the general term in the future without knowing it was a character. That would just lead to a mixed up mess.

In relation to this, how about the case between "potato" and "potatoes"? Right now, the former refers to the Air character instead of the vegetable, which the latter is referring. What if someone who is never aware of Air uses the former to refer to the vegetable?

Yeah, for common English words (that actually show up sometimes in images), qualifying the character is probably okay, unless it's a REALLY common character.

I moved the Air dog-thing to potato_(air) and the food to potato.
