Thoughts? I like plural better but I don't have any sort of objective reason I can give as to why it should violate our tendency towards singular.

I would go with gears simply for the fact that one gear alone doesn't usually do much.

What about cog/cogs?

gears, alias cog/cogs to gear because a gear without cogs a gear is a circular disk. (Also who the hell tags cogs)

Only had 3 posts anyway, I changed it to gears.

"gear" is also a mass noun referring to "equipment", fwiw. Maybe that's your subconscious aversion to using the singular in this case, jxh2154.

No disagreement so far so aliased to gears.
