Tag implication: double_v -> v

Posted under General

Actually disagree with the v_over_eye -> v implication. The v shape created by the hand, doesn't necessarily come from the v hand sign. For example images like post #787026 wouldn't receive the v tag, because it isn't the same hand sign as that for the v tag. There are plenty of other cases like this.

It's not the same pattern as that used for the peace or victory sign, and outside of it being placed over one's eye such a pattern could easily be generated simply by the user just having their figures stretched out. Only in the context of it being placed over the eye or possibly someone doing the walking with their fingers gesture would that shape actually be an indication of a gesture.

In short, outside of the extra context (ie it being positioned over the eye) that hand shape is too easily created by other normal reasons to be an indication that a gesture is being made.

From my understanding peace and victory signs are created by a V looking from the palm or back of your hand, not by a V created from the side of your hand. The V tag is used as a catchall for the symbol which is created from the palm or back directions, people do not use the sides when creating this gesture. Likely, as I've said before, because it can easily be done in that way for reasons other than what could obviously be seen as a hand gesture.

The v wiki simply refers to simple making a v shape with the index and middle-finger, and under that definition, while peace and victory sign is aliased to v, the wiki definition seems to be broader than that.

The intentions of the v_over_eye tag was to include the variety of v-shaped hand gestures characters can have over their eyes. While many of these will be the common "V"/peace/victory hand gesture, it is not actually limited to those gestures that would fall under that tag. A hypothetical example (though I'm sure I've seen this around here somewhere) is a character making a V-shaped gesture with their fingers. Their palm is faced toward their nose, thumb side facing toward their face, index and middle fingers out straight, and ring and pinky fingers bent down and perpendicular to the palm. This gesture creates a V shape, and if it was over the character's eye it would receive the v_over_eye tag. Outside of this context though, I do not believe anyone would agree that such a hand gesture is the same as what would be tag V. In short, the v_over_eye tag is actually broader in scope than what the v tag covers.

The V Wiki makes the assumption that people know that the V shape is created with the palm facing in or out. People would not recognize a v shape created in the other forms, because it simply is not recognizable as a gesture, because of how fingers natural bend in that direction and naturally create that shape when moving their fingers. The V is of a specific gesture, and that gesture requires that the palm be facing either in or out.

Well, conveniently enough I haven't committed this one to the system yet (it's in the list I'm going through).

I'll hold off for now although I don't see any in the tag currently that I'd have a problem applying v to.
