Pretty much every tag gets misused by some person, somewhere. It's not reasonable to think that 100% of the people will remember or know and that 100% of the people will follow the definition set down, so don't try and use that as a reason. Plenty of tags have to be tended because there are always people not following what the tag is defined as, even when the concept is simple or the tag name would seem obvious.

An image can share the same symbols as playing cards, or even a similar backing pattern as a playing card, but it's just a theme. Playing cards defines a very specific object, things that are themed off those objects do not necessarily have to actually depict such an object. This is not like the hearts tag where a pair of heart boxers will automatically have hearts on it. If something is "themed" after cards it could mean many different depictions, and not all of those depictions will include the actual objects.

The only thing you're suggesting is counterintuitive is the fact that your choice of a tag name has the name of another tag in it, and you can't seem to grasp why one shouldn't automatically equal the other.

I think your choices for comparison are rather poor. So what if most food_themed_clothes are also tagged food? If you'd bothered to look, I think you'd see that many of them actually have food depicted in the image or have a food print on the outfit. Even then, food is a specific object and to be food themed usually requires the depiction of that object. You're trying to argue that is the same as playing card theme, but that is incorrect. Playing card themed could simply be the presence of the card symbols, those symbols do not actually represent the cards themselves.

My idea of creating playing_card_theme was great, but I don't think it serves as a good replacement for the use of playing_card when the theme exists. Even with a restriction like that, I don't think we can assume that 100% of the people would remember that playing card-themes are an exception; one or more people could still reasonably add playing_card to the themed images and search for them using the tag.

The suggested exception is relatively counterintuitive and ad hoc, because we don't have many other tags of specific themes to compare; there is only food_themed_clothes, and even its images often are tagged food. Relatedly, we have hatsune_miku_(cosplay), with hundreds of pictures where the actual Hatsune Miku does not appear anywhere. In spite of that, all of them are tagged hatsune_miku anyway.

It does matter, the only real defining characteristic of a "playing card theme" is really the image having hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Playing_cards the tag should refer to the actual card, whether it is an object or the whole image. Just because there are some of those symbols plastered on something, doesn't actually mean anything on whether it actually involves cards.

Also for your second reason, just because there was no alternative in the past, does not mean that returning them under the same categorization is the right approach.

post #924888 depicts a pillow shaped like a spring onion. It is tagged pillow and spring onion simultaneously.

Many of the posts now tagged playing card theme were tagged only playing card before I created the theme tag.
