chestnut_mouth

Posted under General

Just noticed this tag and I'm sure I'll find it useful as I thought that mouth shape needed a specific tag. I had been tagging those as :< open_mouth but that doesn't even come close to giving the results I'd want (given the open triangular mouths and group images with multiple expressions). I was going to change the mention of a "teardrop shape" from the :< wiki (which to me, is the same thing as chestnut_mouth: a pointed top but rounded bottom) to note this tag. I think it should stand as a separate tag and not be implicated, but that's arguable, so I'm bringing it up for discussion before making any wiki changes.

Just to point out, the initial wiki definition for the tag actually specifically defined the tag as covering the "teardrop shape" mouth and no other shape. When I edited the wiki back in 2008, I merely expanded the number of shapes to also mention the other major shapes that were being tagged :< as well.

If you were to completely remove the teardrop shape from the tag, you might as well spinoff and remove the triangle-shaped mouth as well and restrict the tag to only the upside chevron shape, since the triangle-shaped mouth is also a specific expression that could be spun-off and then allow then for 3 specific expression tags instead of 1 specific expression tag and 1 mix tag of 2 different expressions.

I'm fine with that too. What would be the best way to name it? A few I've thought of: triangle_mouth, triangular_mouth, :<

To be honest hadn't really thought about the name. At first I was thinking it'd be just be as easy as triangle_mouth, but with the alternatives (particularly :< since it matches :<) that are just as good in my mind, I'd probably just go with whatever the majority of people who provide input here thinks it should be named.

Would definitely be a good idea to have at least one alias go to whichever tag we choose, so if we go with a name tag we'd have the emoticon aliased to it (:< -> triangle/triangular_mouth) or the reverse with name -> emoticon (triangle/triangular_mouth -> :<).

Personally, I don't feel the need to split :< into three separate tags. But maybe that's just me...

Anyhow, it's really convenient to be able to search for all such mouth shapes with a single tag, so I would vote for either keeping :< as an umbrella tag or coming up with a new tag for this.

Keeping :< intact has several advantages: we won't need to redefine and cleanup it, and people will be able to continue using it the way they are accustomed to.
The downside is that it will be harder to find chevron shaped mouths. Unless we make a new tag specifically for them, but I don't know how to call it.

Alternatively, if we decide to split :<, it would be nice to decide on a general umbrella tag first and move all posts currently under :< to it. After that we would be free to redefine :< and implicate it to the new tag.
