Or did they just have Roadbuster as a kid?
Nah, people just put any old mecha picture they can find in the Nostalgia pool. Like Awesome Mecha or Badass, it doesn't really have a theme anymore, it's just any random image.

That explains all the obscure mecha shows on here, I mean seriously, Srungle is on here? find me someone who knows who Srungle is!

Yeah, it's pretty dumb. Still not as useless as the Awesome Mecha pool, though: giant robots are by default awesome (that's kind of the whole point of them), which means more or less any mecha picture on danbooru ends up there.
I've not actually seen anything of either Dorvack or Srungle besides the credits. However, thanks to a friend who got me plenty of '80s anime themes at the time, I heard the music enough for those images to evoke a sort of nostalgia—more for the era than the shows specifically, but nostalgia nonetheless.
But we have 70s and 80s tags, why can't people use those instead? And the "as long as the image gives nostalgic feelings to the person who added it to the pool, it's relevant" argument doesn't really work since ANYTHING will be potentially nostalgic to at least someone.
