The comics themselves are recent, but the contents are based (if, perhaps, loosely) on actual events, so maybe it wasn't out whenever it was this happened.

Some Gundam series are considered better than others, and depending on the fanbase (but on the Internet, the most loved ones are generally the Universal Century-era, the G Gundam and the Gundam X continuities), there are quite a lot that are considered to be better forgotten.
The most polarizing series are generally the ZZ Gundam series (due to its shifting to a more humoristic tone, which was a HUGE contrast to the extremely bleak Z Gundam) and the entirety of the Cosmic-Era, but it's mostly because of SEED Destiny, which was riddled with plot stupidities, and it also ruined SEED for lots of fans (which was a shame, because SEED itself wasn't so bad, being a rather decent homage of the Universal Century universe).
Concerning the size of the Gundam franchise, it's pretty safe to say that one month is a minimum if you want to watch everything. It's been here for over 30 years after all.
Though, on a personnal note, I'd suggest to his wife to show him After War Gundam X as an appetizer, and Mobile Fighter G Gundam (which manages to be as manly as Gurren Lagann, with Gundam) as a break between the UC universe and the CE universe.

And now there's Iron-Blooded Orphans and the Build Fighters series.
