More like "You were playing danmaku so much, your skill sucks." But yeah, if you look at it closely it's just talismans. Looking badass, yes, but ineffective unless the opponent is oni or youkai. Here is her mother, another Miko, this is like using Water Pulse against a Gyarados. Utterly useless.

The Sandai Miko was from a time where there was no Danmaku. In fact the way she's acting she's ashamed Reimu relies on Danmaku instead of using her divine power to BREAK BONES AND TEAR FLESH, which if you think about it, she is right.
The whole Danmaku thing is "playing" in the first place. You could consider the PC-98 era games more "Battle like" since the "fair spell card" system wasn't in place either. The previous Mikos before Reimu's times actually sealed/exorcisted demons rather than just "beating" them. You could consider the fact that Reimu made all battle non-lethal to be blasphemy to her entire family line.
ZUN said Reimu won't play danmaku anymore when she gets older. Well, Akyuu praises the danmaku as an effective means of preventing harm to the Hakurei shrine maiden and preventing the power levels of the inhabitants of Gensokyo from falling beyond how weak they now became due to ages of peace, but one has to admit it probably looks ridiculous to older people. (Not the centuries-old youkai, just old people.)
I mean, to them it'd probably look the same as kids trying to act Power Rangers and beating others up.

First time I heard of this but if true, holy shit, that would be awesome from a story stand point(For anyone like me that actually cares about the story). Even if I will have to wait till Touhou game 20 or something.

Now I think I know why ZUN refuses to let Reimu and Marisa age: he doesn't want to ever have to depict them growing up and abandoning danmaku for more adult methods of dealing with youkai (or in Marisa's case, possibly becoming one).
