The lead ship of the Italian Zara-class heavy cruisers in Kantai Collection, named after the city of Zara, Dalmatia, now part of Croatia and known as Zadar.
Zara has long wavy blonde hair, with a french braid. She also has brown eyes and large breasts.
Zara wears a white shirt cut to reveal her shoulders and armpits, over which she wears a black corset. She also wears a red miniskirt with anchors attached, brown pantyhose and grey boots. Accessories include a red ascot and a mini hat based on the appearance of the historical Zara's rangefinder. Her machinery consists largely of four twin-gun turrets.
For her second remodel, she loses the pantyhose and wears a garter on her left thigh, while her skirt becomes layered, with a layer of white underneath the red. She gains a cleavage cutout in her corset, and her boots now have high heels. Her hair now features a side braid on the left side of her face. For her machinery, the positions of her turrets is altered, and she gains additional secondary batteries and anti-aircraft guns. She now wields a seaplane launcher that resembles a Breda 30.
Many of her voice lines make reference to her sister Pola, who made her debut in the Spring 2016 event, several months after Zara. Consequently, Zara is sometimes depicted as talking with or searching for a nonexistent Pola, usually to the dismay of the other ship-girls. Zara's constant search for the missing Pola (up until the latter's introduction into the game) reference events during the Battle of Cape Matapan in March 1941. The historic Pola got torpedoed and left behind, forcing the historical Zara, her sistership Fiume and four destroyers, to backtrack and search for Pola (and exposing themselves to the British in the process, which resulted in the loss of Zara, Fiume and two destroyers).
