ookami (game)
Ookami is a game developed by the now closed Clover Studios, a former subsidiary of Capcom.
Ookami follows the story of the sun god Amaterasu, who is in the form of a white wolf. The unique graphics of the game make it seem like a story painted upon a scroll. This becomes a vital part of playing, as you must use the Celestial Brush to paint upon the world to alter reality, such as drawing a line to cut something in half, drawing a bomb to blow something up, and filling in areas to restore broken or missing objects.
Though designed to be genderless within the context of the game, Amaterasu was a female sun goddess in Shinto mythology, and many fans refer to "Ammy" (as Issun calls her) as female. Amaterasu is referred to as "Mother Okami Amaterasu" by fellow deities, and is referred to as a "maiden" by a blind ghost.
Throughout the game, you are accompanied by a small creature named "Issun", who appears to be nothing more than a tiny bug that gives off a green glow, though he is actually a creature called a "poncle", and looks bug-like because of the hat he wears, which is made from a beetle's round shell (with antennae). This perverted little guy acts as your guide, and also your voice when speaking to people, as Amaterasu cannot talk. In fact, while Issun can understand most animals, he cannot understand Ammy outside of her actions and canine expressions.
The title of the game is actually a pun. "Okami" means "great deity", but when you change the lettering to a different Japanese character system, it can also mean "wolf".
A popular practice for fans of Okami is to draw what one would assume a human Amaterasu would look like. Many variations exist.
Has since spawned a Nintendo DS sequel, Ookamiden, and Amaterasu has made a playable appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
