Sega Corporation (株式会社セガ Kabushiki gaisha Sega), pronounced /ˈseɪɡə/ (US/Canada/UK/New Zealand/Australia) and usually styled as SEGA, is a Japanese multinational video game developer, publisher and hardware development company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with various offices around the world.
The company started as the merger of two different coin-operated game machine companies made by Americans: Service Games created in Hawaii in 1940 and Rosen Enterprises founded in Japan in 1954. The name SEGA comes from SErvice GAmes.
Originally a maker of video game consoles, it later shifted into just creating and publishing video games for other game consoles. It's the creator of the popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
Since 2013, Sega is the parent company of fellow publisher Atlus.
