touaoii (touhou)
NUZ released the new official art for Rachel in Touaoii 2: Disembodiment of Teal Angel
Join Rachel the Temple maid on her adventures through Gensaki to solve the dis-place-ment incident.
A parody of Touhou, the Touaoii Project started as nothing more than vandalized 16-color Touhou pixel art on reddit's 2017 April fool's joke, /r/place.
/r/place was a communal pixel graph, to which any user could add only one single pixel every 5 minutes, with the intent that coordinated communities could make something, but uncoordinated individual efforts would ultimately be meaningless. In many ways, it was a social experiment. It started as a blank slate of chaos, but communities started drawing art on it, and /r/Touhou's was one of the most well-received, proudly emblazoned with the words /r/TOUHOU HIJACK LOL. The mural caused a large spike in Touhou searches, with many coming to the subreddit and inquiring about what exactly Touhou is. The mural was well-maintained throughout its existence, but in the very last seconds of /r/place's runtime, two vandals each added a pixel to the H and second U of the "TOUHOU", which turned the easily-vandalized word into "TOUAOII". Before anyone could fix it, the place locked forever, sealing the vandalized name into the final graph.
The Touhou community then did what it does best, which is make memes out of it and take them way too far. The Touhou subreddit was quickly re-themed as the Touaoii subreddit, with ZUN-style art of a fake 2hu named Rachel. It has now gone as far as to spawn fake screenshots of a shooting game that doesn't exist, actual fan music for the game that doesn't exist, and even serious fanart of its primary original character, Rachel the Temple Maid.
