Tapir Tail discussion

Posted under General

I've noticed that while the tag tapir_tail is used almost exclusively for Doremy_Sweet's tail, her tail isn't a tapir tail. Tapir tails are short and stubby, while Doremy's definitely isn't.

Looking up what a Baku is, all my search results described it as having an ox tail. Would it be alright to manually change all of the posts tagged with tapir tail to cow_tail? I'm fairly sure an ox and a cow are the same anyways.

From Wikipedia (Baku):
The Japanese term baku has two current meanings, referring to both the traditional dream-devouring creature and to the zoological tapir (e.g., the Malayan Tapir).[1] In recent years, there have been changes in how the baku is depicted.
-----
An early 17th-century Japanese manuscript, the Sankai Ibutsu (山海異物), describes the baku as a shy, Chinese mythical chimera with an elephant’s trunk, rhinoceros eyes, an ox tail, and tiger paws, which protected against pestilence and evil, although eating nightmares was not included among its abilities.

I highlighted some pertinent terms from the above Wikipedia snippet to show what Blue_Stuff is talking about. Some of the confusion might have occurred because Baku referred to two different things. For Doremy Sweet, Baku is not referring to a zoological tapir, but the traditional dream-devouring creature. It seems that there is even some confusion amongst fan artists, since most of the Doremy Sweet (baku) depictions show a tapir with a long cow-like tail whereas tapirs only have short stubby tails.

+1 Therefore, I'm in favor of moving all references with Doremy Sweet & tapir tail to cow tail.

Edit:

This should be done via a mass-update and not an alias, since if an actual tapir tail is being depicted, we don't want it automatically tagged with cow tail.

It shouldn't even be a bulk update. I'm of the opinion that tails and animal ears should only get the generic tail or animal ears tag unless they unmistakably belong to a particular species. Tails like in post #2055739 and post #2288831 look nothing at all like any specific animal's tail; if anything, they look like a demon tail. This is something that needs to be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Technically, male Tapirs have a different part that could be confused with a tail. This implies Doremy is a either shameless Futa or a boy. If you examine her official ingame portrait, she's kinda flat...

Was not aware of this...

Now that I know there is really no standard depictions, I agree. Still +1 though for migrating away from tapir tail.

As a related note, this could probably relate to baku_(creature) vs tapir too. While they tend to look the same, if it had a long tail it'd be a baku and if it had a short tail it'd be a tapir, right? Though I guess if the tail isn't actually visible it'd be hard to tell, we could probably use the context of the picture to tell the difference.

For example, post #2413320 would obviously be a tapir while post #2117118 is obviously a baku.
