While playing around with the tag api I stumbled over the tartan_skirt tag. Is it nessecary to have this tag? Could it be replaced with the tartan skirt tags? Or should it used more thoroughly?

Just alias plaid_skirt <-> tartan_skirt they're the same thing.
e: plaid gets my vote now that I notice I forgot to voice an opinion.

Plaid skirt sounds much better than tartan skirt in my mind.
Aliased to plaid_skirt.
I see many images with just tartan + skirt but not tartan_skirt

Perhaps in those images the tartan is somewhere besides on a skirt.
There's a ton of these kinds of tags, like pink_thighhighs, black_bra, green_panties, white_dress, polka_dot_bikini. It seems a bit silly to me.
We now have tartan_skirt > plaid_skirt but plaid > tartan. I would have voted for tartan_skirt since that is the original name for the pattern and the main article title on Wikipedia.

Well, if you were looking for an image of images specifically with green_panties and that post had pink, black, green, white, polka_dot, thighhighs, bra, panties, dress, bikini and was lost in a see of posts which had green in them somewhere... I rarely use colour_clothing tags to be honest, outside of distinctive outfits like white_dress and red_dress.
