They're basically stirrup_socks.

This seems to be the closest fit so far... but they don't really look like socks. I guess it works though. According to Wikipedia, leather socks were a thing up till the 16th century

Does adapted_costume guarantees alternate_costume as well?

Expanding on this question...

For a game character, this is a costume other than the standard one that can be unlocked within the game.

There are quite a few pictures under adapted_costume of kancolle characters that feature costumes that are in the game that are themselves adapted versions of their standard outfit eg. post #2364283 which is Shigure Kai Ni's Midsummer artwork, and an adapted version of her basic art. Most such images are given adapted_costume and not alternate_costume but the official art (post #2071271) seems to be given the alternate_costume tag instead...

Which is the right way to deal with such things?

I would say the two are mutually exclusive. Adapted costume is like shades of the same color, while alternate costume is like a different color altogether.

I think that alternate costume should be used for official alternate versions of clothing. If it's common enough, you might also want to consider giving it a specific costume tag, such as used in the idolmaster series. The Adapted costume tag is usually for unofficial artistic variations of the character's usual wear.
