Why would they use the ladder if theres no wall to prop it up against?
Lack of instructions/rules also ruins the results. If someone is given a tool and told to do something, the person will naturally assume that you want them to achieve said goal using the tool you've given them regardless of what the tool is. (ie. If they had walked in with a tree pruner, they would naturally assume that they are NOT supposed to use the tree pruner.)
This has been parodied constantly with situations where a human is too stupid to use either the stick or the chair. I believe that it was in the Simpsons as well.

It's a test of intelligence and problem solving. True the start of it has a box ans a stick, but they *had* a ladder, which they could have leaned on the sign, and with one of them propping it so it won't fall, can get the banana.
