Though the animation seems smoother I'm rather torn on the art shift.
Though the lack of Serena is a bit disappointing as I'm a guilty Amoreshipper. I'm actually more concerned if they're going to sweep all that badass development Ash got in Kalos this time around.
Serena or no I really wish they'd keep the badassery he got from XY. His XY design even reflects a certain maturity to him.
Knowing the writers they just don't give a shit either way.
Poor Serena. All that build up and tease only for something like this to happen. Now she knows how Misty felt.
I'll hold my breath and say the that new Ash is actually Ash Jr or something, to keep the hopes that the whole shiptease was leading up to something.
I think we already established that the writers hate Ash, with the way they treat the poor boy.
*cough*pokemon league*cough*
Was a bitter pill to swallow. I had really high hopes for his victory. All that development and that mataurity. I watched old seasons and it really shows much he's really grown in XY. Especially after the blunder that is the BW season.
In a silver lining of it all. Compared to the past leagues Ash did make it farther. 2nd place which is not a bad position.
And it seems Kalos loves Ash compared to previous leagues where he was treated like some upstart trainer.
His fight with Sawyer was really awesome too. But I suppose I did hold a small amount of doubt so as not to be disappointed too much.
A small bit of me though hopes if Ash is going to school in the SM anime. The past girls could come back. And well harem hijinx abound.
Don't hold your breath, guys. A friend who follows the anime told me that they brought back the guys who wrote that craptastic Tobias episode just to write the episode where Ash lost to Alain. They seem to literally have a kill team in the writer department whose express purpose is tanking Ash whenever he gets close to anything meaningful league-wise.
And while I like Serena, I had a feeling she was gonna get Misty'd. The writers have proven time and again that they don't believe their target audience is capable of handling things like romance, let alone multiple romantic options, and that they are utterly unwilling to give the generation protagonists their proper focus because that would mean reducing Ash's screentime, and thus that of Pikachu, the franchise mascot/sacred cow.

That friend of yours is an idiot then, because that's completely false. The BS Tobias episode's screenplay and story board was done by Masashi Sogo (screenplay) and Hiroyuki Yamada (story board), the 2 episodes where Ash battled Alain in the Kalos Pokemon League was done by different people. Shinzō Fujita did the screenplay for both episodes but Ep 130's story board was done by Yūji Asada and was also the assistant director of that episode, while Ep 131 had Masakatsu Iijima do the screenplay and be the assistant director.
They don't hate Ash at all, if they did they would have retired him years ago and they DO care about him and his growth. Hell, him LOSING also helps him grow cause it shows he has more to learn and more room to improve. Cause how is he gonna improve and get better if he always wins? There is always that one trainer out there who is better, it would be boring if there wasn't. Of course Tobias doesn't count at all though. But you HAVE to give him credit for not only being the runner-up in the Kalos League, but also almost defeating Diantha during their second battle.
Plus, all this complaining about "de-aging" Ash just because the animation team is no longer Team Kato after XY ends is dumb while also saying he's no longer badass and mature. Here's the thing, we only got like THIRTY SECONDS of footage from the Sun and Moon anime series with scenes that are barely 5 seconds long and out of context. We haven't seen enough of Ash and how he acts to adamantly say that he was downgraded. Wait for the series to air, watch at least 5 or more episodes, and THEN make a judgement call.
I'm just surprised that even JAPANESE fans are making jabs at this, and they aren't as cynical or snappy as Americans and Europeans are and are more willing to suspend disbelief. And all because of the change of animation, wow... xD

People want to see a win. Just ONE win would make everyone happy. Instead it's a literal guarantee that every season, Ash is going to get shat on in some manner at the league. Fans would be happy with a single league win. Even the folks across the pond are starting to realize this is a train wreck. If even the Japanese viewers are growing sick of this whole farce, then clearly something is very wrong, since as you said, they're a lot more relaxed about the show.
As for the writers, I was told it was the same team, not specific writers. So you got me on that.
