A Japanese bolt-action infantry rifle, adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1906. The Type 38 was an improved version of the Type 30 (of 1897) chambered for the 6.5x50mm Arisaka cartridge. Although the Type 38 was superseded by the 7.7x58mm Type 99 in 1939, the older, less powerful rifle remained in service with some IJA units throughout World War II.
