The artist Mountain Pukuichi requested I remove his art from the site. This has been done. Unfortunately this includes the Kagamin Bocchi comics.

Is there a way to access the note history of deleted posts? I'd like to save the translations of his work if they haven't been deleted as well.

Did he give a reason for it, or was it just "this is my art, delete it or else"?

A while ago someone said that he wrote on his blog how upset he was about his art getting posted on foreign sites and threatened to stop drawing because of this.

(Incidentally this seems to be exactly the point where he ran out of ideas... scapegoat, anyone?)

He didn't seem to mind having readers abroad, although he wasn't too happy about his art being hosted on sites other than his own. But that was months ago. There's no indication of why he would request removal now. Maybe he didn't get the photographs he wanted?

It wouldn't be so annoying if it weren't for the fact that much of his art was in comic form, thus meaning it's intended to be read. He doesn't mind us seeing his work but wants it to be on his site? That's as good as banning all non-Japanese speakers for much of his work.

It's also a bit silly that my account now registers ~40 deletions because of this. In my case it doesn't really matter (being a mod with 11,000+ uploads a few deletions are insignificant), but that could be killer to a member-level user who is trying to make a good impression and get invited. I'd look at their account and see a bunch of deletions and the chance of me inviting them would definitely drop.

He probably just wanted more hits on his blog.

How lame. At least http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=131958 is still there but it only has a fraction of his pics, and I'll be surprised if those won't be gone soon too...

It wouldn't be so bad if it showed the reason for the deletion. But neither there nor on the individual posts does it show that it was at the artist's request.

Is it possible for a mod to retroactively give a reason for deletions?

It turns out that it was my cache doing that. I disabled it but now I see a password-protected page and not 404.

Seriously, that goes to show again that respecting deletion request by default is wrong. IMHO, if they contact the site and give some decent reasoning, of course there's no reason not to do that, disappointing as it might be, but if it's just another instance of Japon being a dick, they should have to try harder than that.

Now, now. Let's not jump to conclusions. The whole blog is offline (the admin's message says it's under construction), and until it comes back there's no way to know if it has anything to do with us.
Anyway, if some Japanese artists take notice of danbooru's existence, it's best to cultivate a friendly relationship with them. They might have valid reasons for wanting people to visit their own sites: for example, I think Mountain Pukuichi said it was a pity that he couldn't read the foreign readers' reactions. It could also be that he doesn't want his pictures to appear together with all the porn that gets posted on danbooru. Perhaps we should ask him once the blog is back.

How does he expect us to do that? Very very few of us can communicate in Japanese. Having all his art pulled doesn't seem conducive to fostering conversation.

Most Japanese artists are strictly against having their art posted on other sites. There is even a special site about that to which many link:

And BTW in Japan it's usually considered rude to link to a site without contacting the webmaster first, unless it is explicitely declared "link free".

I don't understand how an artist can post fanart on the internet and not expect it to be redistributed by fans. It's also pretty hypocritical to get mad about people "stealing" your fanart when by definition when you create fanart you are ripping off the character designs and art style of another artist.

Anyway, maybe someone who speaks Japanese could email him and ask him to reconsider. Maybe he doesn't realize that he's losing a lot of Western fans of his work by doing this.
