A firearm is defined more as a portable arms weapon or gun. It's something you can carry with your bare hands. The definition for gun can encompass other weapons such as cannons rather than just portable firearms.
I'm going by dictionary definitions so someone else can argue if they want. I'm not completely sure if firearm should imply gun.
