[REJECTED] Katsushika Hokusai -> Katsushika Ooi

The bulk update request #2072 has been rejected.

create alias katsushika_hokusai_(fate/grand_order) -> katsushika_ooi_(fate/grand_order)
mass update katsushika_hokusai_(swimsuit_saber)_(fate) -> katsushika_ooi_(swimsuit_saber)_(fate)

Reason: I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but Hokusai is actually the octopus creature and not the girl. The girl is supposed to be Hokusai's daughter Ooi (or Oui, or Ōi, full name is 葛飾 応為). This is a similar situation to Orion/Artemis. Maybe not a big deal in practice, but given Ooi's exploding popularity it may make sense to differentiate the two.

I'm not sure how many people are actually interested in searching for Hokusai/Tokitarou himself. That's why I'm in favor of aliasing hokusai and leaving tokitarou alone.

Should we add an implication from the swimsuit form to the normal form while we're at it?

Hokusai's in-game biography in FGO says: "晩年には三女の“葛飾応為(おうい)”を助手として共に暮らしていた。"

Going by howto:romanize we should spell it Katsushika Oui to match the hiragana given.

Isn't this a spoiler?

I'm not a fan of deviating from a character's official name or alias, even if it's technically correct that "Hokusai" is really Oui. You don't find out about the two's true identities until later, so people operate under the assumption that "Hokusai" is the girl and refer to octopus as "Tokitarou," and the tags reflect this.

I can't help but think this BUR is a solution in search of a problem.

Either that or give her an "(all)" tag to implicate both of them to. Thus far not every Servant who's got multiple forms has gotten that treatment, but we probably should standardize that. I mean if Mordred (who also has a swimsuit form as her only variant) gets the mordred_(fate)_(all) tag, certainly Hokusai/Oui should get one. We just need to settle first one whether we're going to use her official name or her spoiler name for the tag.

In her original Foreigner class form, considering her identity as Oui to be a spoiler is valid (even if it's quite easy to unlock the bond dialogue lines where she confirms it,) but I think her new Saber form throws a wrench in this argument.

Saber Hokusai's dialogue when summoned (i.e. basically the first words you hear from her when she actually joins you as a playable character) begins with the line 「セイバー葛飾応為…っとと「葛飾北斎」サ!」 - "Saber, Katsushika Oui... er, Katsushika Hokusai, yeah!"

I guess you could consider even her summoning quote to be spoiler territory, since you have to play through the prologue of the summer event (a single story segment, can't imagine it takes longer than 15 minutes) to get her to join you and say that line. But it seems flimsy, especially since arguing that, you could by extension consider any FGO character's summoning quote (or other dialogue you need to actually have them to hear) a spoiler if you're not personally lucky enough to roll them in the gacha.

As a "welfare" servant, though, Saber Hokusai is impossible not to get unless you skip her event entirely.

Now, to argue against myself: The original Hokusai's summon quote introduces herself as only "Katsushika Hokusai", and her bond 1 line says '"Hokusai" is made up of an octopus and a girl. I, alone, am but a simple girl.' Taking all her dialogue into consideration, including her Saber lines... she seems to consider herself Hokusai, or part of Hokusai, or Hokusai in addition to being Oui.

So even if it's not a spoiler that she's Oui, tagging her as Hokusai wouldn't be wrong. I have no strong opinion on which tag ends up being used.

Updated

To clarify, I don't play F/GO, so most of my knowledge is secondhand (whether it's observing little fanart details or reading the Fandom wiki), so thanks for the info.

Speaking of wikis, from what I've gathered, Tokitarou fuses with Oui in their Stage 3 form, meaning "Hokusai" becomes the true Hokusai eventually. It's an argument for keeping the status quo, to me, anyway.

Seconding Hillside Moose here, I feel this is a wholly superfluous change. The character is, both popularly and officially, known as Hokusai. There's a key difference with the Artemis/Orion situation in what Moose described just above, as well.

This, coupled with the other arguments given by both Moose and 7HS leave me in favour of the current tag.

I'm in favour of leaving things as is. While technically Ooi is the one in the picture, her identity is Hokusai as much as he OctoDad is, because that's how the game introduces them. Yes, she's technically Ooi... but she did a lot of art under that name too while he was alive. They shared the nom de guerre, which is why they both got summoned together in the first place.

It's not the Anne Bonny and Mary Read situation - they're sharing a Saint Graph, and unlike the Orion situation where Artemis hijacked someone else's Saint Graph, they're effectively the same individual albeit with different personalities.
