I was wondering if we could distinguish this ensemble with a battle ballgown tag for females who wear both a large dress and armor over top it. There is the armor and dress search, but it's not as reliable for finding this type of outfit.

True, I did an armored dress search in Google Images and yielded several better results. Battle Ballgown was just TV Tropes' entry for this getup.

Several alternate names I can think of include combat dress, dress armor, and battle dress. Something that implies that it's feminine attire and not meant for males to wear.

Can you list some examples other than Saber?
My guess is that you want to use this not only for dresses, but also skirts and a variety of Japanese clothes.

A quick search for faulds got me only Saber (post #1044256) and Eucliwood Hellscythe (post #850976).

How much armor does there need to be?
I could even imagine some Scottish armored kilts (of course worn by men).

From what I know, there's Hillo, Gradriel, Eclair, Alexia Lynn Elesius, Lenneth Valkyrie, and Gwendolyn, aside from your examples. They're more European in design, but it doesn't have to be limited to that.

I didn't know about the faulds and kusazuri searches, but I'm sure those could count. I also didn't consider Scottish kilts. Shows you how much I know about armor. :/

The point is that these dresses are armored and designed for combat rather than just being elegant or for dances/weddings/special occassions.

Well unless there's anything, I'm going with armored dress like Remin suggested. If there's a better name for this, it can be aliased.

No, they can't. Kusazuri and faulds are both a specific type of real-world armor originally not worn with a dress.

Armored dress implies that there is a dress and reflects the trope correctly. Automatically implying that all faulds and kusazuri are an armored dress dilutes the trope and would cause problems tagging men.

For reference, this fine gentleman (post #994730) is wearing (a) kusazuri and this one (post #1044598) faulds. Neither or them is a woman or wearing a dress.

Oh, and since I forgot to say it earlier, I'd like to chip in that I like armored dress because it more directly implies that you mean dress in the context of an article of women's clothing than a military uniform for formal occasions, unlike dress armor and battle dress.
