Reason: A choke is the act of something cutting off flow in a wind pipe e.g. the intake of a petrol engine. A choke can also be the object blocking the pipe. A strangle is a choke/squeeze on the neck.
We want to keep the "choking on food" case tagged sensibly. I'd suggest carving out choking just for that, and aliasing the rest to strangling (gerunds are the canonical forms on danbooru). I'm undecided whether choke should go to choking or strangling, but probably the former, just to keep it consistent with other base -> gerund aliases. I'm open to counter-arguments here, however.
No, asphyxiation is when you cannot breathe for whatever reason. Strangling is when one person is trying to asphyxiate another by the use of physical force. They're very definitely not synonymous, although an implication might be in order.
So strangling is wrapping something around the neck and pulling back on it, meaning to cut the air-flow, but the motion is important, not the asphyxiation.
Asphyxiation doesn't necessarily mean the neck is blocked, but a lot of strangling images would still have asphyxiation too. So does drowning count?
Even though choking is for when any wind pipe is blocked in any way, we'll only use it for something in the neck causing asphyxiation. "Something in the neck" is not choking unless they're asphyxiating or coughing. "Choking on food" should cover this too then. If so:
Oh and where do things like asthma and allergy attacks fit into this? Doesn't feel like they should go with choking, but it could be pretty hard to tell most of the time without background info, cross-sections and dialogue.
Should we just add asphyxiation and maybe coughing tags, give it it's own tag or lump it with choking?
Just tag asthma and whatever else is visible in the image. See what is currently tagged asthma. It covers not only asthma attacks, but also the concept of asthma itself.
There's a couple of images like the last panel of post #1086738 where one character suspends another in the air by gripping the neck. I want to tag it, but is it something worth tagging? If so, are strangle_lift or strangle_hold sensible names?
And I found sleeper_hold and sleeper, seems to be a wrestling move, but looks identical to choke_hold. Should they be aliased, moved or left alone?
Edit: And headlock. Implicates/aliased to choke_hold/visa versa?
I've been going through choking posts and changing most of them to strangling and I'm starting to think we need another tag and need to broaden choke_hold to cover some cases I've seen.
