Danbooru

Danbooru 2 upgrade on Feb 16, 2013

Posted under General

I believe I shall provide an example of the issue I face.

http://danbooru.me/posts/1362067

ON MY SCREEN: There is no longer the "transparent yellow box thing" over the Japanese text. I click "Note", and it auto-jumps to the top of the page. I then click the picture (like a bunch of people are telling me to) and... nothing happens. Nothing at all. I scroll down, below the picture, below the comments, and right below the "Text Body" box (I.E. what I'm typing this in right now before I hit "Submit") is the translation, right on top of "Before editing, read the how to tag guide."

On pics with lots of translated stuff (like http://danbooru.me/posts/899904), which USED TO have a bunch of little transparent yellow note-boxes, each one over a block of text with a translation for said block of text, there is nothing. Smushed below everything, like in the above pic, is PART OF the translations, all kerfuckled together, with big chunks missing.

Are these problems affecting anyone else?

Forum search is not working here, and I agree with the others that the user page design is totally screwed. No direct links for artist page, my comments, and tag subscription (I really depend on this for post moderation beside mod queue).

Plus, are Janitor's power nerfed or something? As per Hinacle, I can't delete posts anymore.

I don't have a problem seeing the existing note on this page, nor do I have any troubles creating a new note. What browser are you using? I've got Firefox 18.0.1 here.

ETA: It shows up fine on Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 as well. Ditto Google Chrome.

ETA2: I looked back a few pages and you mentioned you're using IE7. Sorry to say this, but time to upgrade.

Updated

can't we sort the pool section from the "latest updated" like usual rather than alphabetical sorting like now? what if a pool gets updated, how can we know?

Where did the parent post field on the upload page go?

Why do users have the ability to delete their forum posts, and what's the point? Their posts still appear, just with a big (DELETED) next to their name.

Why are records no longer color-coded?

Dmail is now grouped between sent and received messages. It would be nice to have an ALL MESSAGES option so I can follow the conversation by middle clicking each message into their own tab.

Overall this upgrade seems more like a downgrade when you're taking away features rather than adding them.

Updated

Also, I don't know if any of you noticed, but are the subscriptions updating for any of you. My subscriptions aren't ever since the upgrade (I think).

I get taken to an error page ("That page does not exist") whenever I try to update my tag subscriptions, but I see them updating when I go check my profile afterwards. If it helps, I am only a Member here.

Unless you mean the actual images appearing in the subscriptions, in which case please ignore me. :)

I also never quite understood why non-Privileged or higher members are allowed to have tag subscriptions in the first place if they don't show anything anyway...especially now that they can't be used as a central tag shortcut hub post-upgrade.

It'd add a huge overhead for the clients, both in terms of bandwidth and memory. We have loads of pictures with resolutions like 6k × 7k, and a couple images which are over 100MB in their original form. Resizing that client-side would be terrible, and bump the bandwidth use for everyone for no gain.

Samples are a must, they just need to be done sanely.

Resizing huge images client-size isn't that terrible, it boils down to a few tag attribute changes, all image processing is done internally by a browser. I didn't see anybody complain back at danbooru v1, maybe I just missed it, dunno. The only overhead would be bandwidth, yes, but 850px? It may be reasonable to resize, let's say, images that exceed 2500-3000px in both dimensions, those usually still look good after resizing because they are basically a huge res of normal pics, and that would cut off the truly unnecessary bandwidth - only the users who really need the original huge resolutions would download them. Emphasis on 'both' dimensions, because dealing with posts like post #1358780 requires some thought - sampling it is useless, you can make nothing out of sample and are forced to view the full-size anyways. And wait for god-knows-how-long until full size loads and replaces expanded sample. The only thing I can suggest after some thought is to add one more user dialogue while uploading, which would show up in explicit cases and offer sampling variants.

Not to mention the server problems when resizing images that large. Maybe it's not that awful in ruby, but php libs tend to load the entire image in memory, then UNCOMPRESS it into bitmap, and only then start processing. Processing 10mb image like that causes out-of-memory error in a blink of eye.

Updated

Because I don't know the outlet for it (if there is one, I'dn't mind being directed), but I'd very much like to see a frontpage that's not populated with posts. This being more of a personal preference, since I had an inoffensive visual bookmark (Opera's "Speed Dial"), and my bookmarking/favoriting/etc. compulsions will kick in any time I'd load up the site as-is.

As for posts' tag lists, I agree, the headers take up an unwarranted amount of space.

Otherwise, from a matter of minutes of the new site, I've run into the stated uploader:*-vs-user:* problem. </whine>

EDIT: Oh, I can already see the tag separations being a boon for the *_(cosplay) and *_(cameo) tags and the inclusion of their related character tags.

For some reason Danbooru keeps appending #.USFkI1qj9qM to the end of every URL I click, anyone else get this?

I'm getting this as well, but in my case it's #.USHlcPJApdg.

All Anonymous comments (back from when danbooru allowed anonymous comments, as well as from the accounts that got deleted when deadbooru happened) are instead marked with "albert".

mmhh.. can't see the img... it says downbooru everytime...

Oh, this is hilarious.

Well, I still can't upload images >10mb. I guess because of the new image processing method, linking to 10mb+ urls has become the same as trying to upload it via computer (albeit faster).

Is there any reason that the upload number (or attempt) is kept track of?

Is there a change log of what's supposed to be improved (as I'd like to know the upsides to this mess)

Edit: I noticed a odd thing on comment posts, with the time ago being "_____ months ago ago"

rabidcrayon bumped the wiki thread but by all appearances hasn't even used danbooru since october. Something's up.

The pools names are still displayed in all lowercase and with the underscores, making searching difficult. Returning to the old name parsing algorithm would be much better.

So, I don't know if this is because of the change or not, but when I try to view my favourites, I can only about 120 pictures before I get the 'Nobody here but us chickens' page, and it seems like it's skipping several pages each time. What's the deal here?

I have the same problem that you have when viewing favorites.

Issues with the User Feedback page (formerly Records):

The records are currently being sorted primarily by Category, the Date secondary. Before, the records were simply sorted by the Date issued. Going through the pages, Neutral records are being displayed first, followed by Positive, then Negative at the back.

As Hillside Moose pointed out, all of the records are no longer color-coded. Returning the color-coded records would be helpful and easier on the eyes.

All links on the Feedback page that would show users' individual record listings are broken and return a "That page does not exist" error.

My "Uploaded Tags" and recently-used tags aren't showing up when I edit a post. Between that and the completion extension being broke right now, it makes gardening...a bit tedious.

EDIT: On a semi-related note, I hadn't realised you'd killed trac.donmai.us. Where do the DanbooruUp sources live now?

The artist wikis no longer have a link to view all the posts by that artist. Any particular reason for this?

I noticed I've been (supposedly) capped at 20 pending. This could be a problem since it's not unknown for some of the artists I post to post a sequence longer than this.

...So, why in the world would you limit the thumbnail div container to 900px?

For some reason there is an element style over-riding the style sheet defined 70%.
I'm currently using Stylish to force it back.

On a related note, I've always felt the 'booru upload page boxes ought to be longer, not shorter.

It shows the related tags of whichever tag you have the text cursor on...

Even if it was only a applied to the Related tags, since that always returned an answer faster than the rest of the related searches, it would be of more use to have it as it was before.

I do like of listing tags from the wiki. Makes it easier to find the less posted characters.

Updated

Some feedback...

- I love the tag separation.

- Not a fan of having the pool navigation scrunched up over the tags but I'll get use to it.

- Please don't make us go to a drop down menu to open something as useful and used as the Pool Index

- Please either set the Pool Index to display by most recently updated order or allow us to set individual preferences.

Now, as for bugs

- Just in reading this thread I've noticed that a poster with a long name (Evangeline_A.K._McDowell, for example) will have their name overflow on top of the comment they posted.

- Every time I open the site I have to re-accept the TOS (which is fine, I assume that's intentional) and have to log back in, which is a pain. It remembers my username and password (or my browser does) but makes me go click through to process the login. Clicking the remember checkbox doesn't seem to affect it.

- New comments bump the image but when you look at the comments it shows them in oldest to newest order always starting at the first comment. On a image with more comments then is allowed by the comments page view, this has a side affect of not showing the newer comments. On the old site it was the older comments that were hidden as new comments were added.
