Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons tag cleanup request

Posted under Tags

The bulk update request #2345 is active.

Based on the previous thread (post #76564) discussing the topic.

Since 2014, Bokujou Monogatari has been known internationally as Story of Seasons, while the original name, Harvest Moon, remained with the original distributor and localizer of the series, Natsume, which they have reused for their own series of games, developed by Tabot, Inc. This has caused some confusion over the two brands, even if the former series never changed its original name.

As Harvest Moon is mainly associated with Bokujou Monogatari, and not Natsume's newer games, the aliasing reflects that fact. However, Harvest Moon would receive a disambiguation wiki, pointing towards either Bokujou Monogatari or Harvest Moon (Natsume).

Giving Bokujou Monogatari the alias of Harvest Moon 1 instead would allow for easier future tag cleaning.

For character tags, those with 2 posts or less would receive the mass update treatment (unless the tag referred to the playable character(s) of a given entry). Those with more than that have been given aliases instead (unless their name is shared with another in English, but not in Japanese, with exception to the playable protags).

I don't really see the necessity of changing the characters names to their Japanese ones. I feel that would just make them harder to find, especially one belonging to such a relatively long running series even in the west.

Additionally -1 to your proposed Chloe -> Kuroe change. The name is in katakana so would in general be translated as Chloe. Furthermore if you check the sources you used you'd see that they also use that for the file name: https://www.bokumono.com/series/yasuragi/img/chara/yuba_chloe.jpg

Well, if the series name is being changed to Japanese, I feel as though it would make more sense to have the character names change alongside that. However, if folks prefer maintaining the character names in English (and changing those tags that have their Japanese names currently to English), I'll change it in the BUR.

Also, the reason why the Bokumono links are even present is because that's what the previous OP used. I didn't take the time to check the other characters based on Bokumono, including the Chloe that appears in Harvest Moon GBC3, and the Chloe that's been tagged and appears in Tree of Tranquility and Animal Parade. I'll change the tag to Chloe, on your recommendation.

Honestly, a response like this is just what I was hoping for! An actual discussion, a dialogue!

Eating my own words right now...

I'm still waiting to hear a response on my suggestion of potentially maintaining the character names in English, while having the copyrights be in Japanese. Given that another similar series with a long history in the West, Animal Crossing, is too fully in Japanese, it would make sense to follow its precedent. But from what I've been told, the names of Pokémon are in English (while the human characters in that series have their names in Japanese), so having a half-half system (with some exceptions) for Bokujou Monogatari wouldn't be too unprecedented.

I feel like topic #16182 is relevant.

Nice addition, though with that topic, the copyright was already in Japanese. Even if the smaller character tags here were moved manually, you'd still have the main issue of the copyright name, which for simplicity's sake should be moved to the Japanese because of the circumstances mentioned.

There are a few cases akin to the Villager in the BUR, such as the Oracle, the Wizard, and the Witches, though only the Oracle and the Witches are impacted (former becoming Kenjya-sama, and latter both becoming Witch-sama, necessitating differentiation when the English gave them different titles). Maintaining the English names might be fair for them.

But none of the chartags here come close to the amount of posts Villager and Isabelle have; you have to drop down to the third place in AC chartags, Tom Nook, having 34 posts to come close to the upper post counts of HM chartags. Once you reach him, you have only one Harvest Moon character that surpasses him in post count, Angela/Akari, the female player character in Tree of Tranquility, and she was already going to get an alias due to both her post count and her special status as protag (this is all without mentioning the most populous HM chartag, Chuushuu Meigetsu Miku, which is in Japanese, and unrelated to HM sans accidentally sharing a aliased suffix).

The biggest objection in that topic seemed to be Villager needlessly becoming Murabito, despite previous precedent. It even received 5 thumbs up (and a meh), but was ultimately rejected, probably because of that point alone.

If someone has the time, it'd probably be best to add a list of characters to bokujou_monogatari which includes their English names.

Will get on that! Also, it seems that I, ehm, might've messed up in the BUR...

Made a preliminary list, with the most basic of organization based by game. It needs more touching up, but it works as a base.
